Fine Art
Art in the 1970s was evolving. It started to evolve so rapidly, in fact, that a sociologist tagged it as "future shock". The art in this decade was defined by the artists and their audiences.
Artists began to move in different directions. Blacks and women's movements began to start up and minorities began using art to express feelings of empowerment. This was a very empowering decade for black people as a whole. Soul music was flourishing in this decade and black pop artist were become very desirable. Although African Americans flourished during the beginning of the decade, their rein started to end towards the ending of the decade. Women also played a role in the fine arts of the 1970s. Some spread a message of feminism while others still wanted to address the black experience. There were a lot of singers coming out with songs that they wrote themselves and actresses were gaining roles that portrayed feminists sensibility and were becoming role models. Dance was also a very popular form of art in the 1970s. It was embraced by the public and Americans were ready to gyrate on the disco dance floor at any given time. Punk dancing wasn't left out in the 1970s either. While the disco style was more vibrant and sexy with clingy dance wear and flashing colored dance floors, the punk style was more aggressive and rebellious. The Disco style first became popular amongst blacks, Latinos, and gays. The garage band style of punk rock first became popular in New York clubs. Popular moves from punk dancing included "moshing" which meant head banging, body slamming, and other aggressive movements to the beat of a song done in a mosh pit. Pogo dancing was also very popular on the punk scene. This involved jumping at one beat in the song and landing back in the same place on the second beat of the song. Hand movements during Pogo Dancing included shoving and pushing. However, when it came to disco one of the most popular dances was the Hustle named after Van McCoy's hit song. This decade included other popular things in fine art included graffiti which was popularized by young African Americans and Latinos. Other things included the growth of many different art schools.
Overall, the fine arts in the 1970s helped people to make personal statements and to feel empowered. Some people learned that you can have fun and be sexy while others learned to look up to actresses as role models. In general, people learned to express themselves in the decade while fusing existing forms of art from the artistic innovations of the 1960s. |
